Tasting Notes: George T. Stagg 2020 is part of the exclusive Antique Collection,” known for its rare bourbons. This distinguished spirit, named after Master Distiller George T. Stagg, hails from the award-winning Buffalo Trace Distillery. Made from Mash Bill #1, similar to other esteemed blends like Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor, and Elmer T. Lee, it is a sour mash of corn, rye, and malted barley, featuring a lower rye content than Mash Bill #2. This bourbon is smooth and earthy with prominent notes of charred oak, sweet vanilla, and slight hints of dried fruit. The finish is long and lingering with warm notes of cinnamon layered with oak.

History: George T. Stagg 2020 is one of the most iconic and exclusive bottles in the Stagg collection. Bottled at a robust 118 proof, it is aged for at least 15 years, straight from the barrel, uncut, and unfiltered. This bourbon is part of Buffalo Trace Distillery’s “Antique Collection” series, which features rare and highly sought-after bourbons released annually. Named in honor of founder and accomplished salesman George T. Stagg, who purchased his first distillery in 1878, known as Old Fashioned Copper Distillery and Carlisle Distillery, both located by the Kentucky River.

In 1886, Stagg enhanced the facility by installing steam heating in the storage warehouses, pioneering the first climate-controlled environment for aging whiskey. Despite a deteriorating partnership with E.H. Taylor, Stagg continued to use Taylor’s name, temporarily naming the distillery Old Taylor Distillery. Following several lawsuits, the distillery was renamed George T. Stagg & Co. in 1890 and retained the name for many years after Stagg’s death.

During this time, the distillery earned numerous accolades, including “Distillery of the Year.” A young Albert Blanton began his career at the distillery as an office boy and eventually worked in all departments, forming a lasting association with the George T. Stagg Distillery. In 1992, the Sazerac Company acquired the distillery, renaming it Buffalo Trace Distillery, one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States. These barrels, filled in spring 2005, were selected from Warehouses L, K, and Q.
