Tasting Profile
George T. Stagg 2018 is a standout in the renowned “Antique Collection,” featuring rare and highly coveted bourbons. This exceptional spirit, named after the legendary Master Distiller George T. Stagg, is crafted at the award-winning Buffalo Trace Distillery. Utilizing Mash Bill #1, akin to other notable blends like Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor, and Elmer T. Lee, it combines corn, rye, and malted barley, with a lower rye content compared to Mash Bill #2. The result is a smooth, complex bourbon with earthy tobacco notes, intertwined with hints of new leather and oak. On the palate, discover layers of dried fruits such as cherries and prunes, with a sweet finish highlighted by subtle notes of candy and caramel.
History
George T. Stagg 2018 is one of the most iconic and exclusive bottles in the Stagg collection. Bottled at a potent 124.9 proof, it is aged for no less than 15 years, uncut and unfiltered, straight from the barrel. This bourbon is part of Buffalo Trace Distillery’s esteemed “Antique Collection,” released annually in limited quantities, making it a prized possession for bourbon aficionados.
The bourbon is named after George T. Stagg, a visionary founder and adept salesman who acquired his first distillery in 1878, known as Old Fashioned Copper Distillery and Carlisle Distillery, located by the Kentucky River. In 1886, Stagg enhanced the facility with steam heating in the storage warehouses, pioneering the first climate-controlled environment for aging whiskey. Despite a strained partnership with E.H. Taylor, Stagg maintained Taylor’s reputation for quality, temporarily naming the distillery Old Taylor Distillery. Following several lawsuits, the distillery was renamed George T. Stagg & Co. in 1890 and retained the name for many years after Stagg’s death.
During this period, the distillery garnered numerous accolades, including “Distillery of the Year.” A young Albert Blanton began his career at the distillery as an office boy and eventually worked in all departments, forming a lasting association with the George T. Stagg Distillery. In 1992, the Sazerac Company acquired the distillery, renaming it Buffalo Trace Distillery, now one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States.
