Four Roses Small Batch Limited Edition 2020 Bourbon Whiskey

On the serene banks of the Salt River in the Kentucky countryside near Lawrenceburg, Four Roses Distillery stands as a beacon of American resilience and creativity. Established in 1910, the distillery’s architecture mirrors that of California wineries. Remarkably, it was one of only six distilleries permitted to operate during Prohibition, and today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Post-Prohibition, Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon soared in popularity, becoming the top-selling bourbon in the United States. Seagram’s acquired the distillery in 1943, but a decade later, they ceased the production of Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon. The distillery found new life in 2002 under new ownership, reinvigorating the brand.

A unique aspect of Four Roses is their commitment to transparency, showcasing the various distillates and recipes in each bottle. Historically, they use five different yeast strains and two mash bills, resulting in ten distinct distillates for their bourbon blends. Each barrel is marked with a four-letter code that identifies the yeast strain and mash bill, with letters K, O, Q, F, V for the mash bills and E and O for the yeast strains.

Every September, in honor of National Bourbon Month, Four Roses releases a special edition, small-batch bourbon. The 2020 edition, bottled at 111.4-proof without chill-filtration, features a hand-picked selection of batches: a 12-year-old OBSV recipe bourbon, a 12-year-old OESV, a 19-year-old OBSK, and a 16-year-old OESK. Master Distiller Brent Elliott notes, “Each batch in this year’s limited edition bottling is an exceptional whiskey that could have stood on its own as a single barrel offering, but in this case, the sum is even greater than the parts. Together these bring a perfect balance of bright, vibrant flavors and aromas from the 12 and 16-year-old barrels combined with the oak tones and aged expressions from the 19-year-old batch.” This non-core range limited edition is a must-have for bourbon enthusiasts, as once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.
