Historical Legacy
EH Taylor Small Batch represents the vision of a true pioneer in the bourbon industry. In 1869, E.H. Taylor acquired a small distillery in Frankfurt, Kentucky, on the Kentucky River. Originally called The Old Fire Copper Distillery, Taylor modernized it with copper fermentation tanks, advanced grain grinding machinery, and unique columnar stills. Taylor introduced innovative aging techniques using climate-controlled rickhouses, distinguishing his bourbon from others that relied on additives like juices, syrups, acids, and tobacco for flavor enhancement.
In collaboration with Treasury Secretary John G. Carlisle, Taylor played a crucial role in establishing the Bottled-In-Bond Act of 1897. This legislation ensured that spirits labeled as “Bonded” or “Bottled-in-Bond” were produced by a single distiller, at one distillery, during one distillation season. These spirits were also supervised by the U.S. government for at least four years and bottled at a minimum of 100 proof in federally bonded warehouses. EH Taylor Small Batch, crafted from hand-selected barrels and bottled directly from the barrel at over 125 proof, embodies the traditional bourbon-making techniques of the pre-Prohibition era when Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. owned the Buffalo Trace Distillery.
