Taste: George T. Stagg 2017 is a prized part of the exclusive “Antique Collection” of rare bourbons. Named after Master Distiller George T. Stagg, this unique spirit is crafted at the renowned Buffalo Trace Distillery. Made from Mash Bill #1, like other distinguished blends such as Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor, and Elmer T. Lee, it features a sour mash of corn, rye, and malted barley with a lower rye content than Mash Bill #2. This bourbon offers a smooth, rich profile with bright notes of pears mingling with sweet tobacco leaves. The palate reveals warming cinnamon spice layered with dark maple, creating a luxurious tasting experience.
History: George T. Stagg 2017 is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and exclusive bottles in the Stagg collection. Bottled at a robust 129.2 proof, this bourbon is aged for at least 15 years, uncut, and unfiltered straight from the barrel. It is part of Buffalo Trace Distillery’s “Antique Collection,” featuring annually released rare bourbons that are challenging to acquire. Named in honor of the founder and accomplished salesman George T. Stagg, who purchased his first distillery in 1878, known as Old Fashioned Copper Distillery and Carlisle Distillery, both located by the Kentucky River. In 1886, Stagg introduced steam heating in the storage warehouses, pioneering the first climate-controlled environment for aging whiskey.
Despite a strained partnership with E.H. Taylor, Stagg continued to use Taylor’s name, temporarily branding the distillery Old Taylor Distillery. After several lawsuits, the distillery adopted the name George T. Stagg & Co. in 1890 and retained it for many years, even after Stagg’s death. During this period, the distillery received numerous accolades, including “Distillery of the Year.” A young Albert Blanton began his career at the distillery as an office boy, eventually working in all departments and forming a lasting association with the George T. Stagg Distillery. In 1992, the Sazerac Company acquired the distillery and renamed it Buffalo Trace Distillery, one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States.
