History: W.L. Weller Special Reserve Bourbon is a celebrated wheat bourbon, aged a minimum of 7 years—much longer than typical wheat bourbons. The series commemorates the Weller family’s rich history, dating back to the 1740s when they immigrated from Germany to Maryland, eventually settling in Kentucky. There, Daniel Weller purchased a distillery in Nelson County. William Larue Weller, after serving in the Mexican-American war, returned to Kentucky to join the family business, evolving the whiskey into the renowned brand it is today.

In 1849, he introduced the first bourbon using wheat as a secondary grain instead of rye, resulting in a softer, gentler flavor with a slightly sweeter taste. This innovation led to the popularity of wheated bourbons like Pappy Van Winkle and Larceny Bourbon. The Weller legacy continued through various family ventures, culminating in the establishment of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in 1935. Buffalo Trace acquired the W.L. Weller brand in 1999, continuing to produce bourbon using nearly the same recipe as Pappy’s.
