History
W.L. Weller Single Barrel Bourbon is part of a celebrated series named to honor the Weller family. The Wellers, who immigrated from Germany to Maryland in the 1740s, eventually settled in Kentucky, where Daniel Weller purchased a distillery in Nelson County. William Larue Weller, after serving in the Mexican-American War, returned to Kentucky to join the family business. His innovative approach led to the creation of the first bourbon using wheat instead of rye as a secondary grain in 1849, resulting in a softer, sweeter flavor profile. This innovation laid the foundation for iconic wheat bourbons like Pappy Van Winkle and Larceny Bourbon.
Weller’s bourbon gained immense popularity, leading him to mark his invoices and barrels with a green thumbprint for authenticity. Pappy Van Winkle, starting at W.L. Weller & Sons in 1893, eventually became the President of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery. After W.L. Weller’s passing in 1899, Pappy, along with Alex Farnsley, purchased the company in 1908. They later merged with Arthur Stitzel to create the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which opened in 1935. Buffalo Trace acquired the W.L. Weller brand in 1999 and has since continued producing the bourbon using nearly the same recipe.
